BENJAMIN BLUE - GUARDIAN OF
JOSHUA DUNNUCKS UNMARRIED CHILDREN

If you are researching the BLUE family see the Blue Family Association - online!!
This excellent source contains far more than you will find here. Below is a small outline featuring Benjamin & Margaret, their biological & orphaned children. ..

This is just my work sheet as I am trying to learn about Benjamin BLUE, the guardian of Joshua Dunnuck's children.. I believe that the four children listed below as Benjamin and Margaret BLUE's, namely, Sarah, Benjamin William and Peter are his biological children, but am not 100% sure. . His home seemed to have an open door. Herein, in blue text, are quotes, from the Blue Family Association, ABOUT BENJAMIN & ORPHAN CHILDREN: Sorting out his biological and orphaned children is a bit confusing.. The middle names of Tallman and Hinton would suggest a connection between the BLUE and the Tallman families. Benjamin and his brother Garrett (b. 1791 in VA) both used Hinton as a middle name for one of their children. Garrett using Benjamin Hinton Blue & Benjamin using James Hinton Blue. This alone would lead me to think there was a long standing relationship between the Blue & Tallman families. Both of Joshua Dunnuck's wives were connected were from the Tallman family. Their ancestors include Phebe Henton (Hinton) and Benjamin Tallman.. The Blue's migrated from VA about the same time the Tallman family moved from Virginia to Ohio, and can be found in Fayette Co OH and Fairfield OH where Dunn*ck's are known to have lived. Their migration to Kosciusko Co. parallels that of Joshua Dunnuck, and both Blue & Dunnuck families first settled around the Big Turkey Creek Prairie, Benjamin in the fall of 1836, and Joshua Dunnuck fall of 1837 according to biographical accounts - and the same area where Joshua died in March of 1839. Also of interest is Mary Gault. One of Joshua's sisters, Catherine wed a Galt or Gault. I have not tried very hard to track her. Also of interest is Margaret's maiden name. The Blue family association lists it as Riley, but I have seen it in other places as Wiley. Joshua's sister Sarah married a Wiley however they were in PA. but some Wiley descendants, the Wheats, can be found in Indianapolis.
Also check out the the Blue book written by William H. Blue? A copy of it is on file in the osciusko Genealogy Library (the old jail). It's an amazing book, about 4 inches thick and full of Blue
genealogy. Linda

"Benjamin BLUE (1802-1867), m.1824 Margaret RILEY (1793-1881). He was born in OH, probably in Jefferson Co. where his parents owned a farm of 200 acres. While Benjamin was a lad, the family moved to Fayette Co. OH, where he attended the subscription schools of the neighborhood and attained a basic education in the "three R's". Upon attaining manhood, he sought the hand of Margaret RILEY and they were married in Fayette Co. OH. For 12 years after their marriage Benjamin rented and worked tracts of land. It was hard to get ahead, so they decided to go west to seek better opportunities. He made a trip to IN in 1834, traveling most of the journey on horseback, and learned that he could greatly better his condition there. So, in the Fall of 1836, he placed his family into covered wagons and moved to Kosciusko Co. IN. He then received from the government title to a half section of the best land that he could find, in what is now Franklin and Harrison Twps. He was probably the first settler in Franklin Twp. Here they carved a life out of the wilderness and Benjamin later served his county in the State Legislature (ca1851). He was a member of the Democratic Party. Benjamin and Margaret died in Kosciusko Co. IN and are buried at Mentone Cemetery. Census records indicate that Benjamin and Margaret raised many orphan children; some were grandchildren and grand-nephews and nieces, and others bore no apparent relationship. Stacy ROCKHILL (b.ca1843) was living with them in 1860 and appears to be a sister of the second wife of William."

Far more than the meager information listed below can be found under the 5th Generation Families as listed at their site which contains many hundreds of pages of information and has an excellent search engine. He was born in Fayette Co. OH and moved with his father's family to Kosciusko Co. IN in the year 1836. James was educated in a log schoolhouse, with greased paper windows and a puncheon floor. He worked on his father's farm until he reached his majority. Family records and letters indicate that James and Frances were engaged to be married, but the marriage never took place. His first son, James Ashbury, was born from this relationship. Frances was a daughter of Ellis STROSNIDER. She, with her mother, sister and young son, moved to Hickery Twp. of Schuyler Co. IL. She m.ca1854 Daniel LOUDERBACK, and she and her son James were living with him in Hickory Twp. in 1860. James Hinton returned to OH and found employment on a farm, tilling the soil, chopping wood and splitting rails. While thus engaged, he became acquainted with Phoebe BLOOMER and they were married in Fayette Co. OH. She was a daughter of Elijah and Nancy BLOOMER. In January 1856 they removed to Kosciusko Co. IN , rented land from his father and a little later bought 80 acres. He cleared the land and bought more until at one time he owned 320 acres. James was a Democrat and served as County Supervisor.
